Should the England team be limited to English players- is the 6+5 rule for international teams too?

19Jun08

Owen Hargreaves has been one of the first high profile footballers whose nationality has been questioned. This situation is quite clear; when he plays well he is English, but when he plays bad he’s Canadian. England’s sole representative in Euro 2008 is Colin Kazim-Richards, representing Turkey.

During Euro 2008 we have witnessed the performances of Brazilians; Roger Guerreiro, Mehmet Aurelio, Senna not to mention Pepe and Deco. These players have represented Poland, Turkey, Spain and Portugal respectively. The Poland team might not have needed Guerreiro had Podolski and Klose played for the country they were born in, instead of Germany.

Gael Clichy has yet to play for France and would be eligible for a call up for the England team. The next bunch of England internationals could include the rising stars of our international club academies. Future England call-ups could materialise for Vladimir Weiss (Man City), Miroslav Stoch (Cheslea), Gaƫl Kakuta (Chelsea), Fabrice Muamba (Arsenal) and Niklas Bendtner (Arsenal) amongst many other prospective candidates.
